Thunderbirds sign Scott Campbell to a one-year deal

Oct 21, 2019

Halifax, Nova Scotia – The Thunderbirds announced today the signing of veteran and free agent defenseman, Scott Campbell to a one-year agreement. Signing Scott Campbell with Thunderbirds is a major win according to Styres, who is hoping Campbell's veteran presence and leadership will round out an already solid defensive corps.

“Scott is a proven competitor in this league and knows what it takes to build a great team,” said Styres. “He is one of the most respected players in the game and a class act, he possesses all the qualities that you could want in a leader and teammate.”

The Markham, Ontario resident is no stranger to the league, just finishing up his 15th season in the National Lacrosse League where he spent nine years under Curt Styres in Rochester. Campbell won three NLL Championships with the Knighthawks and was a vital part of their three-peat in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

“It was a natural fit for him to re-join us in Halifax, it’s like coming home for Scott and his family,” said Styres. “The Thunderbirds are excited for the City of Halifax and the Province of Nova Scotia to get to know Scott Campbell and we are proud to have him represent our new brand as a Thunderbird.”

Campbell’s relationship with Styres was a key decision maker on joining the Thunderbirds organization. “Curt has to be the most passionate owner in all of lacrosse and you feel that passion as a player through everything the organization does,” said Campbell. “After discussions with the organization, seeing the excitement, understanding the vision for the team I wanted to be a part of it.”

The defender has played in 219 regular season games, collecting 927 loose balls. Head Coach Mike Accursi is happy to have Campbell back on his team for many reasons. “Soupy is an incredible asset to our team,” said Accursi. “He is a tremendous defenseman and even better leader. His high lacrosse IQ and great communication skills make everyone around him better. He’s in incredible shape and can run the floor and score in transition. I am thrilled to have this workhorse as part of our team.”
