Thunderbirds sign Austin Shanks to a three-year contract

(November 10, 2020) The Halifax Thunderbirds announced today they have signed forward, Austin Shanks, to a three-year contract extension.
The 5'10" righty entered his third professional season and Inaugural Season in Halifax with 100 pts in just 26 games. Shanks, a standout at The Ohio State University was on pace to break personal bests in goals, assists, and loose balls in his third season with the organization.
"I couldn't be more excited to be back with this team for another three seasons," said Shanks. "I've learned so much in the three years I've been with these guys and last season we really hit stride with what we're able to do as a solid unit. I can't wait to get back to The Nest with these guys and finish what we've started."
In just nine games played, Shanks amassed 32 points, ranking him fifth on the Thunderbirds in scoring. His (5+2) performance against Saskatchewan was his best outing of the season, and featured one of the most memorable goals of the 2019-2020 season, sending the game to overtime with his last second goal that helped erase a nine-goal deficit.
"We're really excited to have Shanks signed on for another three years," said Head Coach, Mike Accursi. "He's an elite player in this league and continues to grow and develop. Going into year four, I expect nothing but great things from him."
The 2018 fifth overall selection, Shanks helped the 2018 Knighthawks reach the NLL Finals for the first time since their historic three-peat run. In just five games, the rookie finished third amongst league scorers with his 18 points.
His knack for scoring timely goals and dynamic play is something Head Coach, Mike Accursi, looks forward to seeing for years to come, and sees embracing a leadership role to players like Clarke Petterson and incoming rookies.
"He (Shanks) will play an important role in the youth movement of our offense for years to come."
