Thunderbirds Re-Sign Truro native, Chet Koneczny

(July 6, 2020) Halifax, NS - The Halifax Thunderbirds have re-signed Truro native, Chet Koneczny, to a one-year deal.

“Re-signing with the ‘Birds was a no a brainer for me,” said Koneczny. “I’m a loyal guy, and the players, coaches and management have all made me feel appreciated and a part of the family.” 

Koneczny first signed with the Thunderbirds on October 30, 2019, and began the season on the practice roster before earning a roster spot in March. He made his Thunderbirds debut March 1 in New England where he collected six loose balls and a forced a turnover. He finished the season with seven loose balls, one caused turnover and two penalty minutes. 

“Nova Scotia is my home province and winning a championship at home, in front of family and friends, would be a dream come true,” Koneczny added. “I’m extremely excited and grateful for how the province responded to our arrival and I’m confident that our team will pick up right where we left off moving into next season. We have a ton of character from top to bottom in this organization.”

Koneczny has spent time in Orlando, Washington, Colorado and Philadelphia in his NLL career. In 52 games Koneczny has tallied two goals, 20 assists, and 223 loose balls. Koneczny has also represented the Czech Republic in the 2010 World Lacrosse Championship as well as in 2011 FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championship.

"Chet came in to came in great shape and earned a spot on our roster," said Head Coach, Mike Accursi. "He battled through injury in the early half of the season, but worked hard to find a spot in the lineup and played fantastic. His lacrosse IQ and tough, hard-nosed play is exactly what we wanted. We can't wait to have him in a Thunderbirds uniform next season."

Born in Truro, Nova Scotia, Koneczny was the Technical Director for Lacrosse Nova Scotia from 2014-2017 and is now the Technical Director for New Brunswick.
