Riggs Signs Two-Year Agreement

Sep 23, 2020

(September 22, 2020) Halifax, NS - The Thunderbirds announced today that defenceman Ethan Riggs has been signed to a two-year agreement.

“Riggs is a big strong athlete guy who continues to get better and better,” said Head Coach Mike Accursi. “He will fit into our system really well for years to come.”

The 6’ 3” defenceman was selected in the first round, 11th overall in the 2020 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft. Before being drafted, Riggs spent the 2019 Jr. A season with the Burlington Chiefs. He saw action in 19 regular season games, notching three assists and 31 penalty minutes. In the 2019 playoffs he played in 14 games, had one assist and 17 penalty minutes.

“When I was drafted it was an indescribable feeling,” said Riggs.  “I was stuck in my place when they announced my name. Being from a small town like Dundas you don’t expect something like this to happen to you but when it does you truly don’t know how to react so when it does you are truly great full. It’s something you dream of when you are a kid. Also, to be drafted to such a beautiful city and a place where your family is from us just such a bonus. “

Riggs has spent some time in Atlantic Canada and considers it his second home. His late grandmother is from Cape Breton and late grandfather is from Newfoundland. His uncle also lives on Prince Edward Island.

As far as getting ready for training camp, Riggs is ready to play at the highest level in the National Lacrosse League.  “It’s something you dream of and I’m very excited to be playing beside a player I’ve looked up to in Stephan Leblanc. He showed me that even small-town kids can make it to the professional league,” added Riggs.

Thunderbirds fans should be excited to see what Riggs bring the Thunderbirds defence for many reasons. “I will be able to bring size, aggressiveness and a nasty and ruthless play to the Thunderbirds. I play on the edge without taking many penalties.”
